Rattlers Announce 2018 Coaching Staff

Phoenix, Ariz. – On Wednesday, the Arizona Rattlers and General Manager, Head Coach Kevin Guy announced the coaching staff as they prepare to defend their championship in the Indoor Football League (IFL) 2018 season. Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Line Coach Kani Kauhi and Assistant General Manager, Defensive Line, Special Teams Coach Jeff Jarnigan both return for another season with the Rattlers. 

Steve Axman will be joining the Rattlers staff as the Offensive Coordinator. General Manager and Head Coach Kevin Guy will continue to call the plays as he has always done, but he will rely on Axman to help run the offense and craft the weekly game plan.

"We are excited to have Coach Axman join our staff," said Guy. "He is an outstanding and creative offensive coach who has a lot of experience coaching the game of football.  He is an excellent teacher.  I look forward to watching coach Axman develop our offensive skill positions, and the new ideas that he will bring to continue evolving our offense."

Joe Micela will join the team as the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

"We are equally excited to have Coach Micela join our program. he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the strength and conditioning of our athletes.  Coach Joe will help elevate the physical level of our development and play of our players. I really love the enthusiasm and passion that he will bring to our weight room, and seeing the mindset that this will put our players in. The weight room is a big part of who we are."

Kani Kauahi will enter his 11th season with the Rattlers and his seventh season as the Assistant Head Coach. He has been a part of four world championship with Arizona.  Kauahi also played 11 years in the National Football League on the offensive lines of the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Prior to coaching the Rattlers, Kauahi spent the majority of his professional career working in the Canadian Football League, coaching the offensive lines of the BC Lions (1998-2000), Ottawa Renegades (2002-2005) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2006).

Jeff Jarnigan begins his third season with the Rattlers as the Assistant General Manager, Defensive Line and Special Teams Coach.  Last season was Jarnigan's first championship with the Rattlers. Prior to joining the Rattlers, Jarnigan spent seven seasons with the San Jose SaberCats, coaching in numerous capacities, and has spent ten years in Arena football. Jarnigan also was the defensive coordinator for the AFL's Austin Wranglers in 2004.

Aside from his AFL experience, Jarnigan also was the head coach for the AF2's Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz from 2005-2006.  In 2000, Jarnigan became the head coach for the Minnesota Rage of the Indoor Football League.

Steve Axman, prior to joining the Rattlers, was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Idaho.  Before this he was with the Washington Huskies, and was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UCLA.

During his career, he has worked at four Pac-12 schools (UCLA, Arizona, Stanford, and Washington).  In 1998, Axman served as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Minnesota.  Before that, Axman was the head coach at Northern Arizona University.  During his eight years with the Lumberjacks, Axman became the second winningest coach in Northern Arizona's history (48-41).  His 1996 squad set or tied 14 national records and earned a school best No. 6 ranking.

Joe Micela joins the team having spent over 19 years in the Strength and Conditioning community in Arizona.  He has worked for Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Mesa Community, and Chandler Gilbert Community College. In 2000, Coach Micela founded Performance One Advanced Sports Training, LLC a private strength and conditioning facility geared to developing and training athletes from all levels.

In 2008 Coach Micela was awarded the Developmental Coach of the Year Award from the United States Olympic Committee for developing high-level athletes. He is one of the only coaches in America that has produced an athlete to every level of competition both nationally and internationally.
