PIRATES SUFFER FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON AGAINST FIGHTERS

The Massachusetts Pirates traveled to Texas to take on the Frisco Fighters on Saturday, April 15. Coming off of a bye week, the Pirates entered the game with a record of 2-0 while the Fighters held a record of 3-0. Both teams were competing for the top spot in the Eastern Conference as the only two remaining undefeated teams.

The Pirates started the game with kicker Josh Gable attempting a long field goal on fourth down. The kick was partially blocked, giving the ball to the Fighters. Frisco would then take a 7-0 lead when quarterback TJ Edwards connected with wide receiver Phazione McClurge for a touchdown. The Pirates quickly responded with Jimmie Robinson scoring on a five-yard run. Josh Gable converted the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. The Pirates' defense started off strong, plugging the middle of the goal line making it hard for the Fighters to score again. Frisco would end up breaking through the Pirates' defense though, and scored  on another TJ Edwards touchdown run, taking a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

To start the second quarter, Pirates quarterback Anthony Russo threw to wide receiver Isaac Zico who completed the catch just shy of the 20-yard line. Russo then threw to Thomas Owens, who got inside the five-yard line. However, a false start penalty would move the Pirates back five yards. Thomas Owens would then score on a pass from Russo - Gable's PAT would tie the game at 14-14. On the following drive, the Fighters would score again, when quarterback TJ Edwards pitched the ball to running back Jimmy Smith who took it in for the touchdown to give Frisco a 20-14 lead. The Fighters would then convert a deuce on the ensuing kickoff, which brought the score to 22-14. After the Pirates failed to score on their next drive, TJ Edwards would connect with wide receiver Jerminic Smith to give the Fighters a 29-20 lead going into halftime.

To start the second half, Fighters wide receiver Charles Headen had a long kickoff return where he ran the ball across midfield, dropped it at the 20-yard line, and then picked it up diving across the 10-yard line. The Fighters followed the return with a touchdown run by TJ Edwards pushing their lead to 35-20. Jimmie Robinson responded for the Pirates by returning the ensuing kickoff  all the way for a touchdown. Gable converted the PAT, making it 35-27. After two consecutive defensive stands, the Fighters scored two touchdowns in a row, first by TJ Edwards followed by Jimmy Smith, bringing the score to 49-27. On the following Pirates possession, Russo threw to Zico for a touchdown. The Pirates would then attempt a two-point conversion, which was unsuccessful and kept the score at 49-33.

In the fourth quarter, TJ Edwards scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the night to make the score 56-33 in favor of the Fighters. Ricky Person Jr. would score his first touchdown of the season on the following drive for the pirates, making the score 56-39. The score would stay that way and the Fighters would go on to win, remaining undefeated while the Pirates go into their next game at 2-1.
