2009 Championship
The 2009 United Bowl marked a historic milestone as the inaugural championship game of the Indoor Football League (IFL). Played on August 15, 2009, at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark, the title matchup featured a high-octane showdown between the top-seeded Billings Outlaws of the Intense Conference and the sixth-seeded RiverCity Rageof the United Conference.
In front of a raucous home crowd in Billings—and with strong interest throughout the Greater St. Louis area—the Outlaws defeated the Rage, 71–62, capturing the first United Bowl title in league history. The game also marked the final contest in the RiverCity Rage franchise’s history, adding emotional weight to an already highly anticipated championship.
Billings wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 20–7 lead early in the second quarter and carrying a 34–20 advantage into halftime. While River City continued to battle throughout the second half, the pace remained relentless as the Outlaws maintained control en route to their third franchise championship.
Game Recap
The championship opened with immediate fireworks, as the Outlaws recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff. On the very next play, quarterback Chris Dixon connected with wide receiver Robert Redd on a 31-yard touchdown pass to give Billings an early 7–0 lead. Momentum continued to build when Dixon later found Eric McCain on a flea-flicker touchdown, helping the Outlaws surge ahead 28–14 by halftime.
River City responded with determination in the second half behind quarterback Ben Sankey, who orchestrated an explosive passing attack. Sankey threw eight touchdown passes on the night, cutting the deficit to 28–21 early in the third quarter. Each time the Rage closed the gap, however, Billings answered—extending the lead to 35–21, then 42–28, and later 49–42 as the teams traded scores in a relentless offensive battle.
The fourth quarter delivered peak drama when River City tied the game at 56–56 midway through the period. The Outlaws quickly regained the lead at 63–56, and a late touchdown run by Charles Anthony proved decisive. Defensive contributions—including key interceptions by Muhammad Shamsid-Deen and Cecil Ellis—helped seal the 71–62 victory.
Dixon earned United Bowl MVP honors, completing 14 of 26 passes for 162 yards and five touchdowns while adding 45 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Billings finished with 344 total yards of offense, while Sankey’s eight touchdown passes kept River City within striking distance until the final minutes.
The 2009 United Bowl delivered everything expected of a championship debut—record offense, late-game tension, and a defining moment that set the standard for future IFL title games.
