2017 Championship
The 2017 United Bowl served as the championship game of the 2017 Indoor Football League season and delivered a pivotal moment in league history. Played at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, the Intense Conference champion Arizona Rattlers defeated the United Conference champion Sioux Falls Storm, 50–41.
The game marked Sioux Falls’ seventh consecutive United Bowl appearance, but also their first championship loss, snapping a six-title streak from 2011–2016. For Arizona, the victory came in its first United Bowl appearance and first season in the IFL after joining the league, signaling a major shift in the league’s competitive landscape.
Game Recap
Arizona struck first in the opening quarter when running back Darrell Monroe scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Sioux Falls responded immediately, as Korey Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7–7. Momentum swung back to Arizona when quarterback Cody Sokol connected with Jamal Miles on a 34-yard touchdown pass. After a Storm turnover on downs deep in Arizona territory, Monroe added his second short touchdown run to give the Rattlers a 21–7 first-quarter lead.
The Rattlers extended their control in the second quarter. Defensive lineman Ed Mosley strip-sacked Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown, and linebacker Josh Gordon returned the fumble 29 yards for a touchdown. Sokol later capped the half with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Amos, completing a 27-0 Arizona run and sending the Rattlers into halftime ahead 34–7. Sioux Falls was limited to just five yards of offense in the first half.
The Storm stormed back in the third quarter. Brown connected with Judd Harrold on a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 34–14. Moments later, defensive lineman Tyler Knight forced a fumble on Sokol, which Robbie Rousereturned for a touchdown. The rally continued when defensive back Brandon Peguese intercepted a pass and returned it for another score, capping a 21-point third quarter that pulled Sioux Falls within 34–28.
Arizona steadied itself in the fourth quarter. Kicker Sawyer Petre drilled a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead to 37–28. Sioux Falls answered with another Brown-to-Harrold touchdown connection, narrowing the margin to 37–34 after a failed two-point attempt. The Rattlers responded with timely scoring drives and additional Petre field goals, including a crucial kick with 47 seconds remaining. A late interception by Arkeith Brown sealed the outcome, preserving Arizona’s 50–41 victory.
Linebacker Justin Shirk was named United Bowl MVP, recording eight tackles and one sack while anchoring a defense that withstood Sioux Falls’ second-half surge.
The win marked the end of Sioux Falls’ historic championship run and ushered in a new era for the IFL, as Arizona captured its first league title in its inaugural season—reshaping the balance of power and opening the door for a new championship chapter.
